WEEK ONE: EQUALITY

The Western world believes in the equal value of all human lives, but where did this idea come from? How does the Christian story speak to and fulfill this desire? The goal for this week is to listen for equality in the world around us.

So God created mankind in His own image,
   in the image of God He created them;
   male and female He created them.”

Genesis 1:27

PRACTICE.

Read, watch, or listen to a piece of media that speaks about the value of "equality." It can be a song, movie, article, news clip, book, television show or social media thread. Think about what you just engaged with:

  • What can you affirm as a Christian?

  • Does the message fall short in any way?

  • What else did you notice?

MORE.

  • Read: Dominion, Tom Holland

  • Journal: Write down as many examples of Jesus treating others with equality that you can remember. Look at your list and pick three that would have been most surprising to other people around Jesus. What made Jesus' actions so radical?

  • Consider: Should the Church join with the culture at large in pushing for equality? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? Are there ways in which the Church understands equality differently than society?
