WELCOMING

WEEK TWO: DOORS

Many of us view our homes as private fortresses. This makes welcoming others challenging.  The goal for this week is to "open the door" to others. Focus on how you can make your home a place of welcome.

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

Romans 12:9-13

IMAGINE.

How can you live with your door open to others?

PRACTICE.

This will look different for each person, based on where you live, your stage of life, who you already know, etc. Here are some ideas. Find something that most useful for your context.

  • Spend some time in your front yard. Reading, eating, doing yard work. Look for opportunities to connect with your neighbors.

  • If you don't have a yard, spend time in a common area of your apartment building or go for regular walks in your neighborhood.

  • Invite someone to join in what you're doing at home—games, music, projects, etc.

  • Host a playdate or hangout at your home.

MORE.

  • Read: The Simplest Way to Change the World, Dustin Willis, Brandon Clements

  • Study: Can you think of other stories of hospitality in the Bible that we didn't talk about in our lesson? What can we learn from these stories?

  • Plan: Next week we'll be talking about sharing meals with others. Make plans for who you would like to invite to this meal.

  • Clean: You’ll be more likely to want people over if your house is clean. Do some spring cleaning this week to motivate hospitality in your life.
